Statistics:

  • Motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death for younger drivers in the age group from 15-20. (NHTSA)
  • Traffic accidents account for approximately two percent of the deaths for the overall population but for younger drivers from 15-20 they account for just over 35 percent. (NHTSA)
  • Newly licensed drivers that are 16 years of age have a crash rate three times as high as that for 18-19 year old drivers. They are 20 times more likely to be involved in an accident than all other drivers. (NHTSA)
  • In 2000, when evaluating the entire teenage spectrum from 13 to 19 years of age, 53 percent of auto related accidents were drivers and 47 percent were passengers. Considering only the teenage driving years 16-19, 60 percent of auto related deaths were drivers and 40 percent were passengers.
